We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, weights aren’t just for the guys. If you want to burn fat and see results, incorporating weights into your fitness routine will make a world of a difference.

When us women hear the word weights we get scared and think that that automatically means we’re going to bulk up, lose our boobs and look “manly”. This is all untrue, unless you’re training to be a bodybuilder you can lift weights and tone your body without losing your curves.

When we say weights, we’re talking about barbells. Barbells add weight and resistance so you can tone and sculpt your body. The actual bar varies in weight and can weigh between 45 – 55 pounds. So if you’re just starting out with barbells start with just the bar and gradually add light weights. You don’t need to add too many weights if you’re just focusing on toning.

With all that being said, we asked our resident photographer/videographer and self proclaimed fitness buff DJ what three women friendly barbell exercises he’d recommend we incorporate into our exercise routines. Check them out below!

Squats

Squats are frequently on our must do fitness list so these are a no-brainer. Squats target the legs and the glutes.

Tricep Extensions

This isolation exercise targets the back of the arms and you can do them lying down or standing up.

Good Mornings

This exercises targets the core, lower back, glutes and increases flexibility.

Bonus! Dead Lifts

This exercise targets the entire body, particularly the lower back, core and upper body. A great exercise if you’re looking to build some muscles and a stronger physique.
