After a weekend in the 80s, it became clear that summer is literally around the corner and it’s about to get real. While the summer means more outdoor workouts, one crucial element can derail that, the heat.

Take it from someone who is easily effected by direct sun and excessive heat; summer workouts are no joke. These simple (and even obvious) tips will keep you cool, fit and in the zone all season long. Check them out below!

Workout in the morning or at night after the sun goes down. We all know the hottest part of the day happens in the middle somewhere around 11:30a – 1:30p. To avoid these high temperatures and to keep from overheating change your workout schedule to include working out during those “off peak” hours. Jog in the morning before getting ready for work and end the day with a long walk. Whatever you do, just keep from overheating.

Invest in breathable workout clothing that will help keep you body temperature down while working out in the heat. These moisture wick clothes stay dry during even your sweatiest workout sessions. Find inexpensive moisture wick gear at Forever 21.

Keep your outdoor workouts short and pace them out. If you find yourself getting tired or overheating, stop. Pace your workouts so that you can get through it without possibly passing out. Doing shorter workouts also help pace your routines. Split it up and do short workouts outside and the more intense workouts indoors.

If all else fails take your workout indoors. This is the season where a lot of places offer free classes either indoors or outdoors. Search online for classes in your city and take a friend. Or make this the season where you join the gym. You’ll still get a good workout, but you’ll be in an air conditioned facility.
