It was all about the boys this episode… and Thea and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Get into the recap below!

We start six months prior (or the end of last season) when Thea leaves with Malcolm Merlyn. He asks her why she reached out to him and she tells him that she doesn’t want to feel hurt ever again– that he seems like someone who can teach her how not to. The flashbacks focus on Thea this episode and we get a glimpse of her training with Malcolm. He starts with tea which is a mental exercise and he reveals his feelings in relation to when his wife died, how the pain was unbearable before pouring scolding hot water on his hand. He tells her pain is inevitable but suffering is optional before pouring the water on Thea’s hand.

During the water exercise Thea gives up but Malcolm tells her that it’s okay and it’s not her fault but his. He tells her that he can’t treat her as his daughter but as his student before knocking her in the face. She crawls to a sword and tells him to stay away and he tells him they can begin.

In the present Oliver is on a foot chase and captures a drunk who had been on the rooftop the night Sara died. He tells him that a lady told them to leave and that’s all he knows, he didn’t see anything.

Oliver tells the team it was a dead end and we find out it took a week for Felicity to ID the print on the broken glass bottle. She then tells Oliver that Thea is not in Italy but is in Corto Maltese. Roy tells him that Thea said not to follow her but Oliver tells him that the letter wasn’t addressed to him. He tells Roy that it’s time for her to come home and Roy grabs his gear to go with him because he wants to make things right.

Diggle and Lyla discuss his staying home for a few days and he lets her know that Diggle is going out of the country. She suggests that he maybe go with but he thinks he spends enough time with Oliver as it is. She tells him that Corto Maltese is a dangerous place and they have a field agent out there who hasn’t checked it. She asks if he can go and check on him so she doesn’t have to call it in.

Laurel goes to talk to boxer Ted Grant about one of his students being involved in a break in. He tells her that he was with him the entire night and she accuses him of lying. He pretty much tells her that she’s angry and maybe she should look into boxing to work off some of her anger.

Team Arrow arrives in Corto Maltese with the plan that Oliver will talk to her first. He goes to the address Felicity tracked down and knocks on the door but no one answers… even though Malcolm is standing inside with a bow and arrow. The gardener comes up and asks if Oliver is “Mia’s” brother and tells him that she usually works at the cafe.

Oliver finds Thea and she’s actually happy to see him. She apologizes about lying and tells him that she just needed space. She realizes that he actually came there to get her and he tells her that he understands why she left but he misses her and wants her to come home. She tells him she misses and loves him too but she’s never coming back to Starling City.

Back in Starling, Felicity starts her job working for Ray Palmer. She lays down her rules not realizing that she’s not going to be his assistant. He gives her the task of accessing data from a hard drive and gives her her own corner office.

In Corto Maltese Diggle tells Oliver what Lyla wants him to do while there and he confronts the field agent who’s a little jumpy. Diggle tells him who he is and Shaw tells him that he’s been followed all week because he has information about Argus which has details about soft targets (women and children).

Laurel goes to an AA meeting to talk about her feelings after Sara’s death revealing that she has no desire to drink, she’s just angry. As she’s speaking Quentin shows up and she stops talking.

Diggle goes with Shaw to the “buy” for the information while Oliver follows. Diggle quickly realizes it’s a setup and Shaw stuns him before shooting at Oliver. he tells Diggle that there is a buy taking place just the next day and takes the USB drive from him that he used to identify himself because it will help Shaw decode the actual drive. Shaw escapes before Oliver gets there.

Thea is at work taking out the trash when Roy shows up, complimenting her on her hair. He tells her that he was worried about her and that he wanted to try to convince her to come back to Starling. She tells him that he can’t and he tells her that he didn’t lie about wanting to leave Starling. She tells him that he wasn’t the only reason why she left, it was a combination of things. She tells him that no one knows her on the island or lies to try to protect her with secrets. Roy apologizes for trying to protect her and tells her that if being there makes her happy she should stay.

Diggle updates Lyla and she tells him that Waller has a team on the way and to stay out of trouble. Of course he doesn’t listen because he doesn’t think they’ll get there in time. He calls Felicity to help out with tracking down Shaw. Ray is actually in her office telling her he can comeback, but as she’s talking to him Laurel calls for a favor as well. She tells Diggle that she will email him once she has something and Laurel wants her to find the boyfriend of a girl in her AA group who has been experiencing domestic violence. She tells her that she’ll call her back.

As they’re preparing to go after Shaw Roy tells him that he doesn’t think Thea is going to come back with him. Oliver tells them that he plans to tell Thea everything… like everything. Diggle tells him to think about it but Oliver tells him that the truth is what will bring her back. Diggle tells him that telling her may lose her forever but he tells him that he doesn’t have another choice.

Laurel goes after the boyfriend by herself and attacks him with a bat but he overpowers her, punching her in the face then kicking her in the ribs. She ends up in the hospital and Quentin shows up asking her what she was thinking. She tells him that she just needed to work some things out. He asks her what’s going on, that she can tell him anything but she doesn’t tell him about Sara dying. He tells her to promise that she won’t do anything like that again and she does.

Oliver goes to Thea again to tell her everything. He tells her that if he tells her the truth he might lose her forever because she doesn’t know everything there is to know about him. She ensures that she will always see him as her big brother, it was the secrets he kept about her life that is her issue. He tells her that their father made it to the lifeboat but he killed himself as a sacrifice for Oliver. He tells her that she needs to realize that their parents sacrificed themselves so that they could live. He tells her that she’s his family and even if she doesn’t need him, he needs her.

Oliver and team stake out the buying exchange and get ready to attack. Oliver pulls out the bow and arrows he made for him and Roy just as an army shows up pointing guns towards them. The army is courtesy of Shaw to protect them from outside people during the trade. They start shooting arrows but Olver runs out. Diggle tosses him a gun and he takes down more of the soldiers as Roy looks on confused. Diggle runs after Shaw who tries to escape in a getaway car, Roy takes down the last of the soldiers and Oliver goes after the buyers. He takes them down with just his hands and retrieves the drive. Diggle beats Shaw to a bloody mess and demands to know why he betrayed Lyla. He tells him that the drive was his ticket out of Argus and that he doesn’t know the things Waller has made him do.

Thea goes to Malcolm to tell him that she wants to go home to her brother. Malcolm thinks she’s weak and they have an epic sword fight. Thea wins and he tells her she can go home. Oliver, Diggle and Roy are at the airport waiting for their flight and just when they don’t think Thea will show up, she does.

Oliver returns to Starling to find a beaten Laurel who tells him that she fells like the jacket Sara gave her makes her want to help people. He tells her Sara had years of training and she asks him for his help. He refuses and asks her to consider what would happen to Quentin if something happened to her. She tells him she has to get rid of her anger in some way that doesn’t involve alcohol. He tells her that Sara would never forgive him for training her.

Laurel decides to go back to the boxing ring and asks Ted to train her. Meanwhile, Felicity asks Ray for time off so that she can go to Central City to check on her friend (which is Barry duh). Ray tells her she can go then views the files she decrypted which look like blueprints for some very dangerous weapons. Back at the lair Oliver tells Roy he did good and he tells him that he had a great teacher. Oliver asks him if Thea seemed different to him, but Roy only noticed her shorter hair. As their talking Nyssa al Ghul shows up with an arrow ready to fire demanding to know where Sara is.

Some takeaways…

– I really enjoyed seeing the boys take their trip together and kick some butt. Don’t get me wrong, I love what Felicity adds to the team but it was fun to see them on their guy trip.

– Thea is going to be one badass force, but I’m really interested to see how Laurel transforms. Everyone has been giving Laurel shit for how her character has acted throughout the series, but I think her transformation is going to be very rewarding. Plus we get even more eye candy thanks to her new trainer.

– Next week looks really good. Nyssa is pissed. Malcolm is back in town and was that Thea hanging upside down in the previews? I cannot wait!
