SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)

So tonight’s episode had a lot going on so I’m going to try to make this as simple and understandable as possible… let’s start from the beginning.

scandal kerry washington touch first ladies

Olivia & Fitz

We open with them in a shouting match about why Olivia bought Jake to the hotel where they just got done screwing each other. They go back and forth not knowing they have an audience in the hall and Olivia tells him why Jake is acting as her pretend boyfriend and why she needs him to in order to stay on his campaign because she’s sick of being viewed as his whore.

Not much else happens between them separately until the end when Fitz tries once again to talk about Jake by asking if she really cares about him to which she answers that she honestly doesn’t know. Jake is delivered white house footage from his B613 agent on the inside, who just happens to be Fitz right hand man on the secret service. Jake views the footage of Fitz and Olivia’s conversation about him.

Andrew & Mellie

This was the main storyline of the night. In flashbacks we see that Fitz and Mellie’s marital issues started just after she was raped by his father. They’re constantly arguing because she won’t let Fitz touch her. During this time, Fitz is governor and Andrew is lieutenant governor and he’s outside in the hallway overhearing everything. Mellie bursts out of the room obviously embarrassed to see Andrew there.

He later finds her passed out in Fitz office after trying to kill herself by overdosing on Oxycontin. He forces her to throw up by shoving his fingers down her throat. She survives but isn’t grateful. They develop feelings for each other, and when Andrew tries to act on them Mellie shuts him down telling him that she’s the governor’s wife and he is lieutenant governor before quickly leaving the room.

In the present, a doctor has stepped forward with proof that someone was using Oxycontin during the in the governor’s house during Fitz first term. Andrew steps forward to Olivia and team and says he was the one using the drug but it was for back pain but didn’t get the pills a legit way. Olivia tries to shut it down by threatening the news reporter that she’ll ruin her career. She sends Harrison and Abby to convince the doctor not to go on air. The doctor refuses stating that he plans to get a big payday from this story, but not before letting it slip that the person he gave the drugs to was a woman.

Harrison tells Olivia that the only way to stop the doctor is to air that he’s being paid for the story, which they do, but Olivia puts two and two together and confronts Mellie about the pills. She tells her that she knows Andrew was covering for her and that she needs to immediately end things with him. Mellie puts Olivia in her place, telling her that she’s nothing like her and that she’s never cheated on Fitz regardless of what he’s done to her.

Later that evening, she finds Andrew in a room looking at portraits of previous First Ladies. She tells him that their clear of the drug story and he again attempts to act on his feelings. Mellie shuts him down once again, but then she finally gives in kissing him passionately. Realizing what’s happening, she stops then quickly leaves the room.

Jake/Olivia/Quinn/Rowan

So these characters were intertwined pretty much the entire episode. After putting two and two together, Olivia realizes that her father may have been the one to leak the story about Andrew. She calls Jake to get him to look into exactly what her father is up to, but Jake tells her he doesn’t plan to be entangled into her family drama. Olivia tells him that her father is out for blood and to possibly harm Fitz, Jake and even herself and that Jake needs to do his job and protect the republic.

Jake is delivered a briefcase that can only be opened after his voice is verified. Inside are all of the government’s top secrets and papers explaining exactly who Jake is and what he’s to do. He arrives at Olivia’s house and pretty much puts her in her place about how things will work if he’s going to be her pretend boyfriend; that the fridge needs to be stocked among other things.

Olivia meets with Daddy Pope for dinner but starts asking him questions about Andrew and if he had anything to do with it. Of course Rowan goes into on of his awesome monologues. Meanwhile, Quinn, who followed Charlie to the restaurant, is perched outside spying on the two of them. Olivia catches her and attempts to try it get Quinn to come back to OPA but she refuses telling her that Huck licked her face and things will never be the same. Olivia tells her to come back home but Quinn tells her to get out of the car. After refusing, Quinn pulls out a gun and tells Liv she’s violent now and she’ll shoot her. Olivia gets out of the car.

Olivia meets with Jake and yells at him about Quinn and why he sent her to track Rowan. Jake tells her that she’s not apart of B613. He meets with Quinn to tell her she’s in over her head, but she turns it around and has him check his email. She hacked into security footage finding proof that Rowan is working with Leo. She tells him that he has the smartest team in Washington but none of them could find out that piece of information. She tells him that one piece of information was free then she leaves.

Huck keeps bringing Olivia coffee. Olivia finally stops him and asks why he keeps giving her coffee when he knows she doesn’t drink it. Huck goes on a tangent about how he didn’t want Liv to be mad at him about Quinn anymore, but where Quinn is is Olivia’s fault because she gave her to him. He tells her he’s a monster who was on Olivia’s leash and he went as far as his leash allowed.

James/David/Cyrus

Cyrus is trying to find out who Publius is. James is freaking out to David telling him that Cyrus is going to kill him while David is once again hiding information and being secretive around Abby; who had just confessed her love for him with no response. Sensing something’s up, she turns to Huck and Harrison for help. James tries to intersect Cyrus and tells him that he’ll talk to the reporter and try to get the source from her. Impatient, Cyrus takes things into his own hands by hiring Charlie to figure out who the source is.

James and David come up with the idea to leak the recording of Sally confessing the murder to Cyrus, but the reporter wants the recording delivered in person so she can meet the source. Charlie has hacked the reporter’s phone so he and Cyrus can intercept the source when they meet. James is too afraid that he’ll get caught and be killed, so David decides to go in his place. While at the donor dinner James finds out that Cyrus plans to snatch up the source. He tries to call David and warn him but he doesn’t answer.

Meanwhile, David shows up at the meeting place, but his head is covered and he’s put in his trunk. While in the trunk he calls Abby and tells her he’s in a trunk and that he loves her and should’ve told her sooner. The car stops, the trunk is opened and he sees that he’s been saved by Abby and Huck.

Harrison/Adnan Salif

After making out… or you know, Adnan gives Harrison a briefcase filled with money. Harrison refuses to work for her again, but Adnan pretty much blackmails him telling him that Olivia doesn’t know everything he did when he got busted and went to jail. Harrison reluctantly cooperates and sets it up so that she can get into the donor dinner.

Hollis Doyle meets with Sally to try and tries to worm his way into her campaign, wanting to choose the next Secretary of Energy for a sizable donation. Sensing Sally is a little off, which she is thanks to her constant flashbacks of her killing her husband, he makes a deal with Cyrus and attends the donor dinner.

At the donor dinner, Adnan finds Cyrus and thanks him for getting her into the country. Cyrus, not realizing Adnan was actually a woman, tells her she needs to leave because he cannot associate with criminals. She tells him that she may be dirty, but her money isn’t and that she has unlimited funds that could be of use for him.

She returns to her hotel room and we hear a woman asking how everything went. Adnan tells her fine and the mystery woman is revealed… it’s Mama Pope!

Some takeaways…

– Not going to lie, this episode had a lot going on… maybe a little too much. There are a lot of side stories, so you throw that in with the fast pace and things can get a little confusing. Moving forward, if this continues the remaining recaps will be broken down by their individual stories to make it easier to understand.

– So did not see the Mama Pope working with Adnan Salif twist coming. I knew Mama Pope was coming back, I just didn’t know how. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out, especially once Olivia gets a whiff of what’s going on.

– I said it last week and I’ll say it this week. I am over Olitz. It’s to the point where it’s even stressful for me to watch. Fitz is beyond selfish and Olivia just keeps falling back into the same role making this an endless cycle that I don’t want to be a passenger of anymore. I’m hoping that they turn towards developing Jake and Olivia’s relationship for a little bit because I think we all need a break from this exhausting cycle.

– I believe Quinn is officially too far gone and it’ll be a while before she’s back on OPA. I also think Huck has sort of lost it too. Actually, I think everyone in OPA has lost it and Olivia needs to get from under Fitz and realize that her team is going awry.
