SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)

Before jumping into this episode’s recap, I first want to say that this was a really great episode and I cannot wait for it to return in January! Ok, let’s get into it!

We start this episode right wear we left off last week with Oliver pretty much dying and Barry just realizing where he is and what’s going on. He figures out what’s going on with Oliver, his blood is super thick and clotting, so he has to use rat poisoning to thin out his blood. It works and Oliver survives (of course) but is not too happy when he realizes his identity has been compromised and Barry knows who he really is.

Recap: Arrow Episode 208 ‘The Scientist’

Oliver starts having hallucinations, first seeing Shado. During a flashback we learn that Shado was killed by Dr. Ivo when he made Oliver choose between her and Sarah. Dr. Ivo pointed the gun at Sara, Oliver went to block her and Ivo turned and killed Shado. He asks Barry to run tests on his blood because Barry tells him some side effects of the poison can be hallucination. Felicity tracks down Cyrus Gold and Oliver goes to Officer Lance as Arrow to tell him about this super human and that the police will have to take him down without him. He returns to his lair for some alone time and has another hallucination, this time seeing Slade and they (or Oliver against himself) go blow for blow.

Meanwhile, Lance takes a small team, including his good friend Lucas and the shady cop working for Sebastian Blood, to go get the Gold. They are no match for Gold who kills everyone including Lance’s friend. Lance survives, barely, and the shady cop only ends up with a broken arm.

Barry and Felicity return to find the place in ruins. Barry tells him his blood is clean and whatever he’s dealing with is mental and not from the rat poison. Diggle gives him some advice and tells him that the people from his past is trying to tell him something, he just needs to listen. They find out about Officer Lance and Oliver (Arrow) pays him a visit. He tells him everyone who dies in the city is not his fault. He then gives him a key that he pulled off of Gold and asks him to take him down.

Felicity tracks the key to a warehouse and Oliver goes off to find and stop Gold and whoever he’s working for. Roy, who is currently crippled, thanks to an arrow to the knee courtesy of Oliver, decides to go snooping around the blood bank for Sin’s friend’s file. While there, men show up, he tries to escape but is knocked out by Gold. He awakes to find himself tied to a seat with a masked Sebastian about to inject him with the superhuman formula. He injects him just as Arrow comes flying in. He gets knocked around by Gold and while down has another hallucination where he sees Tommy. Tommy tells him that he’s not a killer, he saves people and he’s not going to die down there. Oliver gains his strength and takes down Gold while Sebastian escapes. He goes to Roy who appears to be dead with blood running out of his eyes.

He tries to revive him, telling him he’s not going to let him die, and Roy awakes but not fully enough to see that Oliver is Arrow. Oliver returns to Felicity and Diggle and tells them with happened and also that they need to watch Roy since he was injected with the formula. We cut to Sebastian talking to an unidentified man, the obvious person in charge, and we find out that he was ordered not to kill Arrow. It’s then revealed that the man is Slade and we learn that he actually didn’t die from the injection in the flashback. He is currently out to make Oliver and all of his loved ones suffer.

But that’s not all, we cut to Barry for an obvious Flash storyline/spinoff setup. He’s returned to Central City and his lab. He turns on the news and see that they’re trying to turn off the particle accelerator, but they can’t due to the storm. It causes an explosion that sends a wave towards him. He goes to pull a chain down and is electrocuted by the currant and thrown across the room. The scene ends with with an apparently lifeless Barry with electric currants running through his body.

Some takeaways…

– I really don’t have much to say other than I totally did not see the whole Slade storyline coming, at least with him being the one ordering Sebastian around in relation to the superhuman formula. I knew that he didn’t die, because I’d read rumors about him being Death Stroke, but yea, the rest of this season is going to be amazing.

– There were a lot of major setups for the rest of the season. Roy has superhuman powers so we’ll get to see that. I don’t know how this will tie into him being Red Arrow, but I think I’m the most excited to see how his character develops. Thea got a little gutsy this episode and we even hear Oliver call her Speedy, future foreshadowing? I think so.

– The Barry/Flash setup. I’m not sure if he’ll return to Arrow anytime soon. I do know that there is another episode with him filmed but that there were talks about possibly not airing it. There were also talks about there being a Flash spinoff, but that it was possibly put on hold. I’m not sure, I do know that I love to see people joining Team Arrow and I do love Barry’s dynamic within the team and with Felicity. So my fingers are crossed for another Barry/Flash appearance, and soon.

I’m super excited to see what happens during the rest of this season. Arrow returns January 15, with subsequent recaps the following Thursday.
