SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)

Ok, so last night’s episode dropped so many bombs I don’t even know if this recap will be comprehensive. This was definitely not your typical episode of Scandal. This episode starts 15 years prior with a young Mellie and Fitz, pre Governor Fitz. This time period is woven throughout the episode so to make this easy to comprehend I’m going to split this episode up into three parts… Mellie, Mama Pope and Quinn.

Mellie then and now.

So in the flashback a young Mellie and Fitz are introduced to a younger and bearded Cyrus. Cyrus is supposed to help run the campaign for Fitz to become governor, but Fitz wasn’t aware of this and didn’t plan to run. He doesn’t want to use his military experience because of the fact that he shot down a passenger plane and it was covered up; partially thanks to his daddy.

We learn a lot about Daddy Fitz in this episode. We see Fitz and his father’s strained relationship, and how insensitive Fitzgerald Sr. was to his son. Cyrus decides to leave because he’s obviously not needed or wanted, but Mellie convinces him to return the next day. We’re then shown a scene with Mellie and Fitzgerald Sr. and they’re sharing a drink and discussing Fitz running for governor. He then tells Mellie about how Fitz was responsible for the passenger plane that went down and she gets upset. He then uses this as an opportunity to express how beautiful she is and tries to kiss her. She pushes him away and he takes that as a sign for him to force himself on her and raping her while Fitz is in their room asleep.

Fast forward to the present and Mellie is doing an interview to change her image with the public after the whole cheating scandal. After showing the reporter around, they finally do a sit down interview with Fitz present. Mind you, Mellie didn’t think he would show because the night before she yelled at him about no one being there for her when she needs them and how she’s had to sacrifice a lot. So he shows up and the reporter sort of attacks her with her questioning of why Mellie aired their personal business then chose to stick by his side. Fitz stands up for her and puts the reporter in her place and from there, at least to me, it seems like Fitz and Mellie kind of called a truce. We end with a flashback of them at a party where they talk about Mellie being pregnant and from her body language I’m thinking that that baby is Fitzgerald Sr.’s.

Quinn, or should I say Huck Jr.

So Quinn is letting Charlie sort of mentor her at the gun range. He talks about how he’s now doing “private investigative work”. Of course Quinn thinks it’s a good idea to stalk him on his job and he sees her. He pulls her to the side and passionately kisses her, you know because that’s exactly how you mess with a girl’s head. Now Quinn is on cloud nine and she tries to get Huck to open up to her about what’s going on with their current assignment but her puts her off. This only causes her to run to Charlie who decides to bring her along on his “job”. He’s supposed to be doing something that involves needing to put a man to sleep, so he wants Quinn to disable the security cameras.

Of course Quinn is too thirsty for that and wants to inject the man telling Charlie about how Huck let her torture a man once. Charlie gives her the syringes and she goes into the building and acts like she’s signing in but the pen doesn’t work. She asks the man at the front desk (her target) for another pen and when he goes to give her one she injects him. Now she only thinks that this will knock him out for a little bit, but he starts to foam at the mouth. She races over to help him but he has what looks like a seizure and has blood coming out of his mouth, pretty much dying at the scene. Quinn freaks out and runs out to the dumpsters where she tries to reach Huck, but she’s met by Charlie who shows her the security footage and tells her that B613 pretty much owns her now.

Mama Pope.

After diving for the “Fitz Phone” (once again) and not getting any new information from Fitz, Olivia brings the case of what happened to her mother to Pope and Associates. She reveals to the team that this is very serious and potentially dangerous. Everyone is on board and she reveals that the woman they’re investigating is her mother, along with the president and her father; who just happens to be the commander of the most deadliest agency in the US.

With everyone still on board, including Jake, they find out from a woman who collected the tickets the day the plane went down, that a passenger was escorted off the plane by a US Marshall. They think that this will possibly account for the empty seat on the supposedly overbooked plane. They find out that a man who worked the ladder for the plane may have seen who was let off of the plane. They have a picture and an idea that it may have been a guy, but they want to confirm. Jake is supposed to meet the man at his job to talk and get more details.

Once he gets there, there are police, an ambulance and people everywhere. He calls Olivia to tell her that something’s not right and we find out that the man Jake planned to meet was the guy that Quinn killed. Jake tells Olivia that someone is way ahead of them and then we flash to clips between Fitz and Rowan (Olivia’s daddy).

Fitz has been tracking Olivia because he believes she’s in danger. He’s had his people collect info on her and her mother, but they also have info on her father. Once he sees her father’s picture he realizes that Olivia’s daddy is commander of B613. Meanwhile, Rowan is at an unidentified building, going through gates and top notch security to a room very much similar to a cell. Once in the cell he tells the covered occupant “Our daughter has been asking about you” and the person reveals themself and it’s none other than Mama Pope.

Some takeaways…

– A lot of people speculated that Mama Pope was alive (me included) but now we know she really is and that Rowan played a major part in how and why she went into hiding. Next week is going to be intense where Liv may come face to face with her mother. That’s definitely going to be a good episode.

– I loved the young Fitz and Mellie. If I was Mellie I would not have been able to stick around after being raped by my father-in-law, plus the fact that their first born might not even be Fitz’s. I don’t know if he’ll ever find this out, but that’s something that definitely should’ve been revealed, at least to Fitz, a long time ago.

– Mellie and Cyrus tried to trip up Sally’s husband by setting him up with a prostitute while Sally was conveniently away on business. When he passes her up and gets touchy feely with James (Cyrus husband) they come to the conclusion that he’s into boys. We can definitely expect this storyline to get very interesting.

– I do not feel bad for Quinn and the situation she’s gotten herself into; I don’t think anyone does. She kind of had this coming, especially how irritating she’s been this season so far. This storyline is going to get interesting as well. I def see Huck, Liv or both eventually saving her in the end.

– Not quite sure where everything is going to go from here, we’re definitely going to dabble in the Mama Pope/Liv zone a lot next week. We still have Harrison’s storyline from last week to explore, along with now Quinn’s, Sally’s husband and Josie Marcus… along with other things.
