SPOILERS FOLLOW! (do not read if you don’t want to know what happened in this episode)

So, let’s talk about last night’s premiere of Arrow shall we. It opens up with Diggle and Felicity on a plane headed to the island Oliver was stranded on for years because Oliver ran back there after everything that happened with the Glades quake and Tommy dying. The two try to convince him to return home to support his family since his mother is in jail and the family business is falling apart.

Oliver returns to a city in ruin. His sister Thea has taken over running his club, Laurel is now working for the District Attorney’s office and copycat vigilantes have taken over the city. This episode a group of hooded armed men crash a donation dinner and kill the mayor. Laurel decides to try to take them on when they turn on the DA and she ends up looking down the barrel of a gun. They escape and police and Oliver descend on the crime scene.

Oliver realizes Diggle really brought him back to Starling City to address the issue of the groups of copycat vigilantes. Oliver is totally against this, but on the other side of the city in an undisclosed location, the group of copycat vigilantes decide to turn their attention on the Queen family and set out to kill Oliver.

They burst in on his meeting with a company trying to buy out his father’s business and Oliver barely escapes… if you call grabbing Felicity and flying through a window then back into a window a few floors down barely escaping. At this point I was a little frustrated because I was ready for him to lay the law down and deal with this amateur group of killers. He reveals that he doesn’t want to dishonor Tommy’s memory because he died believing Oliver was a killer. I so wanted to sympathize here but I was giving all kinds of side eyes; like dude you almost got your head blown off!

Oliver visits his mom in jail and they have a conversation about the family business, real sweet stuff. Cut to Thea running the nightclub with her boyfriend Roy close by her side. Of course, the four faux vigilantes decide to make an appearance shooting into the air looking for Oliver, who’s not there mind you. Roy decides to be a hero and tries to take them all on when one of them grabs Thea and points the gun to her head creating a standoff. They take Thea and run off.

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back! *insert giddy little girl laugh here… like I really giddily clapped and jumped in my sit* Oliver heads to the basement which only means one thing, it’s time for the hood!

Felicity and Diggle upgraded their lair and even got him a shiny knew high tech looking bow. They track them down by tying the man with a missing hand to a church that held support groups for people who lost loved ones in the quake. He finds them and Thea there, and after an awesome fight scene he tries a different approach by sparing them their lives and turns them into Officer (formerly detective) Lance.

Oliver visits Tommy’s grave where he runs into Laurel who reveals she partly blames The Hood for Tommy’s death and will help her new boss find and stop him once and for all.

Walter, Oliver and Thea’s ex stepfather reappears during Oliver’s second meeting to inform the Ice Queen running the other company that his bank bought out the remaining shares of the Queen’s company, thus moving the remaining shares into Oliver’s hands and making him partners with the Ice Queen. I’m calling her Ice Queen for now until her character develops and I can remember her name 🙂

The episode ends with Roy in a scuffle with a group of guys trying to rape a girl. He’s saved by a lady with platinum blonde hair and sunglasses who I think is the lady Oliver fought a few times last season. Oliver also reveals his plan for the direction of The Hood moving forward. He wants whatever they do to honor Tommy because the city still needs saving. Oh, and he doesn’t want to be called The Hood anymore. It cuts before he reveals a new name but I’m pretty sure he just wants to be called Arrow.

My takeaways:

-I’m excited about the new direction/story line their taking and hope it’s strong enough to last the entire season.
– Not quite sure how long this good, no kill Hood will last, as long as it doesn’t poorly effect the fight scenes.
– I do not want to see a Laurel/Oliver back and forth like last season. I would like for them to either be together or not be together; no back and forth.
– I’m expecting a lot of flashback scenes this season, which I welcome. I feel like there’s a lot that happened on the island that we still don’t know about.
– I want Roy to become a part of the Arrow team. I love the dynamic between Oliver, Diggle and Felicity and I feel his character would be a great asset. I also love this kick ass Felicity!
