With the onslaught of numerous social media outlets, it is even more difficult for people to separate their personal lives from their professional lives. We now live in a world where everything you say on the World Wide Web can be documented and brought back at any point of time. Information never really disappears once it’s published online.

We now have to look over our shoulder when we vent our frustrations about a person or company through our Facebook status or tweets. New laws have to be created to accommodate the rapid growth of opinionated information. It is so easy to type a 140 character or less sentence and offend or upset people you do or don’t know.

Individuals are not the only ones so easily offended. Companies are using social media outlets just as much, even more, as the consumers. They see what people are saying about their company, their products, their employees, whatever is associated with them and use threats as leverage to get their way.

Unfortunately, bloggers get sued like Mark Makhou; or threatened with legal action often; as is the situation with blogger Rachel Kane. It’s kind of like companies or organizations are trying to bully people into liking what they have to offer. They only want people to hear or associate positive information with them. The truth is not every person will like you or what you have to offer.

Letting consumers, or people have the opportunity to voice their true feelings can actually benefit you in the long run. You will be able to take that feed back, positive or negative, and make changes. You first have to make an effort. It’s unfortunate that companies or individuals try to use the legal system as a battering ram to get their way. Rachel Kane was just giving her opinion, her thoughts. She liked some of the merchandise offered by Forever 21, and wasn’t so thrilled with others. She should be able to freely express and discuss those feelings.

In the end it’s her opinion, and everyone has one. What are your thoughts on this topic? Let us know below and on the Facebook page!
