SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)

And the soap continues! I will say that I enjoyed this episode a teeny bit more than the pilot seeing as we got to get a little more depth from these characters. I’m already picking sides and who I’m rooting for. It’s all in the recap below!

blood oil chace crawford ripple effect
We jump right back in where we left off and the pool of oil has caught on fire. Wick and Garry try to rush away knocking over a power line while Hap and the girls try to keep Billy from burning alive. As Wick is driving off the entire property blows up. Garry is freaking out because Wick had a gun and it’s possible that Hap recognized him. Hap tells Billy he owes him for saving him from the guy who pulled a gun on me and he tells them that he didn’t see who the gunman was.

Sheriff Tip shows up at the crime scene and Hap walks him through what happened. An internal investigation is launched since the truck used was one of Hap’s and he tells him that the gunman’s shoulder was on fire. Sheriff Tip also fines a stray bullet from the gun that Wick shot at Hap.

Haps daughter Lacey comes to town after hearing about the accident. Wick comes to the house and Hap shows them his burns causing Wick to get emotional (from obvious guilt). He tells him that he loves him and apologizes for all of the “messed up stuff” between them. That evening Hap shares the list of employees being investigated with Carla but she gets upset when she notices that Wick’s name has been crossed off. She doesn’t think he should take him off the list but after what Wick said earlier that day Hap doesn’t believe he could hurt him.

Hap invites Billy to lunch where they find out from a Rocks Springs Response representative to replace what was lost in the damage it would cost Hap $850,000 dollars. Hap thinks it’s a scam and asks Billy what he would do and he tells him he should start his own outfit and charge those prices instead of pay them. Hap takes a phone call about a deal then tells the rep that he just bought his company and is now his boss.

Hap shares that the investment will be worth ten times what he paid in 10 years and Billy asks if he can invest. Hap makes an exception and lets him in with $500,000. When Billy meets up with Cody he freaks out because she bought a house and there’s not enough money for them to do both.

Sheriff Tip meets with Carla who lets him know that Wick was recently fired and insinuates that he should be looked into. Meanwhile, Wick and Gary try to sell the oil they stole but no one wants to touch it. Wick gets a visit from Sheriff Tip and he gives him the alibi that he was just hanging around with Gary the night of the explosion. As the sheriff is leaving Wick tells him that he’s counting on him to catch the guy who did this and the sheriff tells him that he agrees it was a guy.

Billy and Cody go to Hap’s for dinner and Billy and Wick exchange a few words. Jules shows up and is introduced as Wick’s girlfriend followed by Lacey and the tension between her and Carla can be cut with a knife. Cody tells Jules that they can’t buy the house because Billy wants to do another project with Hap while Wick gets a call from Gary telling him that the guy they met with about the oil is thinking about turning them into Tip for the reward money. While he’s on the phone Hap comes up behind him and touches his shoulder causing Wick to wince. He asks him what happened to his shoulder and he lies and tells him it was from their scuffle in the rain.

During dinner Hap mentions his deal with Billy and he tells him that he has to pull out because he has to handle some things on the home front. Hap tells him he believes he’s making a mistake and he tells him that he doesn’t want to make a bigger one. After dinner Wick is alone when Hap comes up and asks him where he was the night of the rig fire. He tells him he had drinks with friends then ended up at Jules house for the night. Sheriff Tip stops by the house with news that he may have found the thief. He takes them to a warehouse and they find the oil negotiator dead with the gun used at the rig fire. Hap checks his shoulder but there isn’t a burn then looks at Wick who tells them that the whole thing is over now. Tip quickly bursts that bubble and tells him that he now has a murder to solve.

Wick goes to Gary freaked out and asks him what he did but he tells him that it was unavoidable. All they need to do is ditch the truck and then they can walk away clean. Mr. Lundegren shows up at Billy’s place pissed that he lied to him about what he was going to do with the land. he tells him that he didn’t want to do business with Hap which is why he gave him the deal in the first place but now he’s in bed with the devil.

Hap pays Jules a visit and we find out that they had something going on (of course) and she doesn’t even care about Wick. After a passionate kiss Hap tells her to stay away from his son.

Some takeaways…

  • So I want to see more of what happened between Lacey and Carla that there’s so much damn tension. Carla is totally going to use that kiss between Lacey and AJ (bet Carla has him following around Hap taking pictures) for her benefit and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be messy. Speaking of messy, Carla just seems to be a messy person. First there’s Lacey and then going behind Hap’s back to Tip about Wick. I had a slight feeling that she may not be “in love” with Hap during the first episode and I’m still getting those vibes.
  • I feel like Wick is going to be this tortured soul that pisses everyone off but we the viewer for some reason root for him. I mean his family situation isn’t the hottest and now he’s being played by the girl who he said is the best thing going for him. People, she obviously had previous relations with his father. I knew she couldn’t be trusted from episode one.
  • Oh the Lefevers. If anyone’s coming out of this scarred and damaged it’s going to be them. Billy is just so eager and that eagerness might get him caught up. How much can you really trust a man who makes heartless deals like Hap? I think Billy’s last line of the night about them getting out of their current living situation soon summed it up. They might be there for awhile… but hey, at least they have a nice roomy tub.
