SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)

It’s a new television season and of course I needed something to replace my soapy and action packed show Revenge. Enter Blood & Oil. The season premiere introduced us to our group of characters and boy should things get interesting. Check out the recap below!

Billy and Cody Lefever have left all of their family and friends for North Dakota but on the ride there they get into a horrible accident. Like car flipping, probably should’ve died accident. Of course they survive with barely a scratch (because it’s only the first episode folks). They do end up losing just about everything in the crash, like $30,000 worth of washing machines that were supposed to be used in their entrepreneurial efforts. The hitch a ride to Rock Springs and end up at a bar where Wick Brigs is arguing with a Native American woman because he shot a moose, considered a sacred animal. He accidentally shoots his riffle hitting a sign before being arrested for disorderly conduct.

Hap Briggs bails out Wick and tells him that he’s not just going to hand the family business over to him, he’s going to put him to work in the rig. Billy and Cody meet a couple, Kess and Ada Eze at Patchwork Inn and settle in while Billy tries to find work to help pay for new machines. He snags a gig shoveling mud where he formerly meets Wick and learns that Hap is his father. Wick backs a truck in causing a tower to crash and Billy gets the blame but Hap confronts Wick about it. He tells him that he doesn’t deserve to be his son and strips him of everything (because he didn’t think to do that the first time after bailing him out of jail).

Wick goes to Jules (the bar owner) tells her that he’s been cutoff and he plans to “get his” because Hap isn’t the only one who can make money. Meanwhile Cody gets offered a pharmacy job and spends her advance purchasing them a trailer. While working she overhears a customer talking to Hap about closing on a ranch and mentions it to Billy. Billy goes to talk to the ranch owner Clifton Lundegren telling him he wants to develop the land into a car wash. He tells him he’ll sell the land to him for $75,000 so he gets a truck on loan then sells it for $75,000. He takes the news back to Cody who breaks the news that she’s pregnant (already). Billy goes back to Lundegren who ups the price to $100,000 a discount to what Briggs offered giving them until the next day to consider it.

Cody thinks they should throw in the towel and go home but Billy doesn’t want to give up and she tells him she’s leaving in the morning. Billy lets out his problems to Jules who offers to give him the $25,000 if he gives her 20%. Cody stands behind him and gives Jules her necklace as collateral. Billy rushes to the farm and makes it in just in time to snag the deal. He pays Hap a visit and offers him a three year lease for a million per year but Carla tries to call their bluff telling them that they’ll wait them out. Billy and Cody turn right back around and calls their bluff telling them that they’re pretty much out of time and every time they try to counter them the price will go up. Hap pays up and they get a check for a million dollars. They give $50,000 to the Ezes to invest in their restaurant then move into a nice small apartment.

Meanwhile Wick decides the best way to get ahead of his father is to steal oil from him. He goes to the ranch and starts pulling oil and as he’s there Hap, Carla, Billy and Cody show up. Hap tells the girls to get back in the truck and yells for the thieves to come out. Wearing a mask Wick tries to escape but Hap gets him and it turns into a tussle. A couple of guns go off and a small fleck of ash hits the spilled oil lighting it up.

Some takeaways…

  • One episode in and we’ve already got a baby. If you’ve been following any of my recaps or podcast episodes then you know how I feel about babies in the story line. One plus is that it looks like Cody just might be pregnant for a long while. Once the baby comes maybe we’ll revisit this rant.
  • This was the pilot people. I’m still trying to feel these characters out. Now I like Scott Michael Foster but I feel like Wick is going to grind every one of my gears. It’s also nice to see Chace Crawford on my screen again (Gossip Girl fans unite!).
  • I will say that this show is veryyyyy soapy. Like a mix of Nashville and Revenge but I’m not quite sure if it’s good soapy (does that even exist) or horrendously bad but can’t stop watch because drama! soapy. Only time (and a couple of more episodes) will tell.
