We open with Olivia and Jake enjoying a frivolous life on the beach with lots of kissing and canoodling. She receives a mystery letter addressed to her alias Julia Baker and against Jake’s wishes opens it. She pulls out a newspaper clipping telling them that Harrison had been missing and has been found dead.

They return to the states so Olivia can talk to her team about what happened with Harrison. She enters the empty office to find everything covered up and magazines with Fitz on the cover pretty much documenting what he’s been up to since she’s been gone.

She walks into the conference room to see a map with pin marks trying to find her location. Quinn walks in and tells her that she’d been trying to track her down and was able to find her thanks to her love for wine. She tells her that she thought she’d want to know about Harrison. She asks what happened to OPA and we find out that Huck is working as a tech expert in a retail store and won’t talk to her unless she decides to stay for good.

Abbey is now the president’s press secretary… let that marinate. Mellie on the other hand is not doing so well following her son’s death. She lounges around in pajamas all day and has a drinking problem– to the point that they have to replace all of the alcohol with tea. We also find out that Fitz has been alienating himself within his party and has become more liberal.

Quinn intercepts Abbey at the White House since Olivia refuses to buy a phone. Abbey is clearly upset and tells her there is no more OPA. They exchange words and Abbey tells her how she really feels and that Olivia doesn’t care about anyone but herself. Of course Olivia doesn’t take it lightly and goes tit for tat telling Abbey that she abandoned the team too while she was here and should’ve had more of a handle on things. She tells her that she’ll plan Harrison’s funeral herself and she can come or not, but it’s up to her.

Jake shows up at David’s office and asks him about the files he left him to take down B613 and he tells him that there was some pretty heavy stuff in those files and he doesn’t quite know if he should follow through with using them. Jake tells him to use the files to do what he said he was going to do or give them back.

Olivia meets with her father to have dinner. He tells her that she needs to get back on the plane but she tells him that her friend has died and she needs to be in Washington. He tells her to ask him if he did it and she asks him if he had anything to do with Harrison’s death. Of course he lies and tells her that he didn’t have anything to do with it. He then tells her that he had her mother taken care of as ordered by the president.

Cyrus confronts Abbey about not telling him that Olivia has returned. He tells her that Olivia’s return can be detrimental to the president and his finally functioning White House. He then goes to Fitz and tells him that Olivia is back in town. Of course he doesn’t take it well and tells Cyrus to find out how long she’s there for.

Jake walks into the apartment and Olivia tells him that she just can’t deal with planning Harrison’s funeral. As they’re talking her home phone rings. He tells her not to answer it and she doesn’t but someone starts banging on the door. It’s a women who works for Senator Vaughn, telling Olivia that her boss needs her help. Olivia gets on the phone and Vaughn tells her that she thinks she killed the Senator Sterling.

Olivia shows up at the senator’s house. Senator Vaughn tells her that the senator tried to rape her. Olivia checks his vitals and sees that he’s still alive. She tells Senator Vaughn to leave and calls 911. Olivia tries to pass the case on to another lawyer and then goes to see Huck… or Randy at his new job to tell him about planning Harrison’s funeral. She also asks him about what happened with his family. He shuts down and tells her that he’s not Huck anymore and hasn’t been since she left– Huck means hope and he doesn’t have any anymore. He tells her not to return again unless she’s back again.

Mellie and Fitz visit their son’s grave and we clearly see that his death has greatly effected her. She’s still in pajamas and lays on top of the grave caressing the grass and tombstone.

While making out, or the lack there of, Olivia interrupts Jake and expresses her opinion about what’s going on with Senator Vaughn and how she has to hide because she’s afraid of backlash. She then gives in and decides to take on the case. Jake tells her that they need to talk and that the island is looking further away. He tells her that every time their there it’s Fitz time even though he’s the one she’s been intimate with and spending all of her time with.

Fitz asks Cyrus if he knows if Olivia is staying and that he hasn’t told Mellie. Cyrus tells him that everyone knows how this story is going to go, because it’s been the same thing for years.

OPA is now a two man team consisting of Olivia and Quinn. At the meeting with Senator Vaughn Olivia realizes that she’s lying about being raped and tells her that she knows she’s lying and that she won’t come back until she tells her the truth. She calls Quinn for help and she realizes that all of the senator’s assistants look somewhat alike. She realizes that the assistant is the one who was attacked by Senator Sterling and confronts her about it telling her that she knows and that she was the one who called Senator Vaughn.

Cyrus makes an offer to David to be the Attorney General. He thinks it’s to buy his silence and asks Abbey about it. She tells him that she would never betray him and that his obsession with B613 broke them.

Olivia realizes that Senator Vaughn knew Senator Sterling had a type and the assistant overhears and freaks out. Senator Vaughn tries to explain that she only did it because she felt it would help persuaded Sterling in voting for the equal pay act. Olivia is over it and tells the other lawyer that she’s done with the case and she’s leaving the city.

Jake and Olivia show up at the funeral first followed by Quinn who asks about his family. Olivia tells her that he grew up in a group home and all he had was them. Abbey and Huck then show up and it gets super emotional and they drop petals on his grave as they say there last goodbyes. Every one leaves and Olivia stays and breaks down as Jake consoles her. As he’s consoling her he looks up and notices Rowan watching from his car.

Fitz goes out onto the balcony to talk to Mellie and we find out that Fitz tried to commit suicide. He tells her that Olivia isn’t missing and she’s back; he also tells her that he’s not going to see her because it’s him and her (Mellie). Mellie tells him that she’s not going to monitor Fitz anymore and when he sees her he will tell her so she has some warning because she doesn’t believe that he won’t see her.

Jake comes to tell Olivia that the plane is almost ready. She tells him that she keeps thinking about what Harrison would say “Are we gladiators or are we bitches”. She decides to stay and represent Kate, the assistant in her case against Senator Sterling. Huck returns and Abby believes her representing Kate just won them the equal right’s bill. As she’s leaving the congress building she passes Fitz and they almost touch, but they try to act like they didn’t see each other– we all know that’s bullshit.

Some takeaways…

– I’m still (and probably forever will be) Team Jake. I’m beyond over the Fitz and Olivia thing. My favorite scene was definitely the bedroom scene when he told Liv exactly what it was. I almost threw the remote at the screen.

– Did I say how much I’m over Olivia and Fitz… okay. I’m glad Olivia is back and that they used Harrison as the reason why she returned because that was the question on everyone’s mind.

– I’m definitely pissed that they gave us that two sentence background on Harrison when we waited for three seasons to learn more about him before he died.

– Honestly the first episode was okay, but I’m expecting it to definitely heat up as the season continues.
